Funding a Young Inventor

7 Apr

Your generosity strikes again! Today, we helped fund Komlavi Avoryi, a boy in Ghana. He is making it, despite the odds. I want to share a charming note he wrote to us on his journal. Plus, I want to tell you how he reminds me of my dad.

Komlavi Avoryi

Komlavi is an inventor

Here’s what Komlavi wrote to us in his journal on The School Fund:

“thnak you for helping me with my school and to write letter to me it is nice to know taht even though i do not see you that people are caring about me i think abuout it a lot and i like it a lot please may god richly bless you and make your roads strate”

His note really made us smile. It also made us grateful that The School Fund can help connect people who might never meet in this lifetime, so that we can help each other.

Read Komlavi’s bio from The School Fund website, and I’ll explain why he reminds me of my dad:

Komlavi has no recollection of his parents and has been orphaned his whole life. He lives with his two best friends Ben and Isaac in a small shack they built last year out of wood and metal scraps they found around Kissemah Village.

Quiet and shy Komlavi likes to spend his time studying, practicing reading and writing English. He also enjoys creating electrical devices for his house out of thrown away batteries and wires he finds in the garbage. His most recent invention was a small battery powered light he built for his small house which otherwise had no electricity or running water.

Komlavi and my dad share curiosity, thirst for invention, and an ability to cobble together neat solutions from things that are at hand. Komlavi faces a much tougher road than my parents or I did, but I am glad that just this little description of him, and the note he sent us, show that he has innate determination, inventiveness, and hope that will carry him far.

Your purchase of The Magic Seed is making a difference, so…

See Charming Imagination Pages in “The Magic Seed”

20 Feb

A young reader wrote to me to show me her creativity in the Imagination Pages which follow the story.

Sydney, 6 1/2 years old, knows just what to do with the fruit in the story.

What’s more, Sydney shows that she loves to share.

Sharing is the message of “The Magic Seed“. Thanks, Sydney!

A banana split would be great!

Sydney, age 6 1/2, shows all the things she shares

And she also would share her birthday. Way to go, Sydney!

Love Quotes on Valentine’s Day

14 Feb

I can’t resist sharing some of the sweet quotes I receive from children who love “The Magic Seed“.

  • Amy, who received the book for her 5th birthday: “Debbie wrote the best book I have ever had! Mummy, I think she will write another one for my 6th birthday!”
  • And this one really touched me, from Anna Cate, a wonderful 8 year old who writes her own email: “Dear Debbie, I think you should write another book. love, Anna Cate”

I hope this Valentine’s Day finds you sharing happy times with family and loved ones! <3

Contributions to Two Great Students

5 Feb

Here are two recipients of funds from your “The Magic Seed” purchases.

A new face is Kpetermeni Siakor, a talented university student who is eager to learn coding.

And remember Pastory Leone? He is raising funds for his next year of schooling, and “The Magic Seed” purchases donated an additional $200 towards his education.

Thanks for your support, as always!

I was touched to receive a nice email from a favorite teacher, who wrote:

“What a wonderful surprise I got from you yesterday!  I absolutely love the book.  The workbook at the end is a marvelous idea!”

I phoned Mrs. Bengtson, a reunion after over 2 decades, and learned she was expecting to become a great-grandmother that very day. Congratulations and welcome to your new great-grandchild!

Smiling Ornaments

31 Dec

My children wanted to remember The School Fund students to our holiday decorations! Here are the first 4 students your generosity has helped fund through “The Magic Seed” purchases. We made the ornaments ourselves with a little help from my friend, Suz Burroughs.

Thank you, Mrs. Ziff, for being such a wonderful teacher and inspiration!
